President Roosevelt signed the Lend-lease Act to aid Britain. The US had declared themselves neutral in the war, but they also wanted to help the Allied nations. Great Britain also started to run out of founds to wage its war against Germany. President Roosevelt could with the Lend-Lease Act lend or lease arms to any country considered "vital to the defense of the United States". This way they could aid the Allies, and still stay neutral.

April 6

Germany attacked Yugoslavia and Greece and handed Greece over to Italy.

June 18

Treaty of Friendship between Turkey and Germany signed.

June 22

Germany turned against its Russian ally and Axis troops invaded the U.S.S.R.

September 16

German forces attacked Stalingrad in the U.S.S.R. Fighting continued for more than a year.

December 7

Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The American commanders at Pearl Harbor naval base had received a war warning from Washington that American intelligence had decoded. But Hawaii was not mentioned as a possible target, so the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor was devastating. It sank or damaged 21 ships of the U.S. Pacific fleet. Two days later, the United States declared war on Japan, and entered the World War Two. The terms of the Agreement between Germany and Japan said that Germany had to come to Japan's aid if they were attacked. So Hitler, who had grown frustrated with the American navy's attacks on German submarines, more than willingly declared war on the United States.

December 10

Japanese invaded the Phillippines shorty after they had attacked Pearl Harbor. The US troops in the Phillipines was greatly outnumbered. Led by the General Douglas MacArthur they took up the fight against the Japanese.

December 25

Hong Kong surrendered to Japanese.
