1939

August 23

Germany and the USSR signed a nonaggression pact. This shocked the world, because Communism and Nazism was supposed to be totally opposed to each other. Britain and France understood that this was a deal made by Hitler to free himself for war against the USSR and Poland. What they did not know was that the treaty contained a secret deal between Germany and the Soviet Union to divide Poland between them.

September 1

German forces invaded Poland, breaking the agreements from the Munich Conference and World War II began.

September 3

Britain and France declared war on Germany after they broke the agreements at the Munic Conference and attacked Poland.

September 27

The Polish army was unable to cope with the German blitzkrieg attack and the Polish capital of Warsaw fell to the Germans.

September 29

Germany and U.S.S.R., were true to their pact from August 23 and divided Poland between them.
